FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Flight Training

  • 1. How long does it take to earn my Private Pilot’s License?

The FAA mandates 40 hours of flight time before you can take the practical exam. The average student will take the exam between 50-60 hours. Depending on your availability to schedule, and your dedication toward learning, a PPL can take anywhere from 2 months up to a year.

  • 2. Do I have to be a certain age before I can start lessons?

You can start training at any age. However, you must be at least 16 years old before you can solo, and 17 years old to take the FAA checkride for a Private Pilot’s License.

  • 3. How much does flight school cost?

While it can vary person-to-person depending on how often you fly, an appropriate budget for the Private Pilot’s License would be $10,000-$14,000. This includes all training fees, ground school fees, exam fees, and supplies.

  • 4. Is it hard to pass the medical exam?

The FAA wants to know that you have no physical condition that will impair your ability to fly a plane safely. It consists of a routine medical exam, including: an eye exam, a hearing test, medical history evaluation, and checking for blood pressure and diabetes.

  • 5. Does Horizon Dream offer financing?

Currently, we do not offer financing. We do, however, offer a flexible pay-as-you-go schedule. No money is required upfront to begin training.

  • 6. How long does one lesson last?

Our lessons will generally allow you 1 to 1.5 hours of flight time. We recommend booking a two-hour time slot to allow for pre/post-flight briefings and inspections.

  • 7. Can I rent your aircraft after I achieve my PPL?

Yes! We allow all students to rent our aircraft for solo time building purposes, take up friends and family, or maintain their currency and proficiency.

  • 8. How do I get started with flight training?

We offer “discovery flights” for anyone interested in learning to fly. It is a 1-hour flight where YOU get to fly the airplane and experience what it feels like to be a pilot! Please contact us for more information on booking your discovery flight.

  • 9. I’ve completed my discovery flight and I want to start training! Where do I begin?

Great! Contact us at your earliest convenience to discuss the beginning steps for flight training, including: how to obtain a medical certificate, how to sign up for a ground school, and how to register for our free scheduling software.
